Warner Bros. Pictures and Mattel Film have premiered both the first trailer and colorful poster for the live-action “Barbie” movie, which will open around the world starting from July 21st 2023.
In the film, a doll living in ‘Barbieland’ is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world. Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”) directed and co-wrote the script with her partner Noah Baumbach.
The trailer meanwhile is a direct spoof of “2001: A Space Odyssey” for much of its runtime before showing off brief glimpses of several of the film’s major stars, Barbietown, and Robbie sporting several quite accurate Barbie looks.
Margot Robbie takes on the iconic role of Barbie alongside Ryan Gosling as Ken, along with Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Alexandra Shipp, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Emma Mackey, Hari Nef, Scott Evans, Ncuti Gatwa and Will Ferrell.
The film will also open directly against Warners’ former flame Christopher Nolan who is delivering the polar opposite style film with the black-and-white and very serious “Oppenheimer”.
This trailer debuted in front of copies of “Avatar: The Way of Water” last night, and pirated copies quickly spread across social media to a mostly rapturous response.
