Netflix has premiered the trailer for its film adaptation of the stage musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel “Matilda”.
The story follows a young bookworm prodigy named Matilda (Alisha Weir) who is mistreated by her ignorant parents and has burgeoning telekinetic gifts.
At a school run by abusive headmistress Miss Trunchbull (Emma Thompson), she finds a kindred spirit in her teacher, Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch) who encourages her.
This stage adaptation has been running in London since 2011 and successfully played on Broadway between 2013-2017. Ralph Fiennes was originally slated to play Miss Trunchbull, but Thompson ultimately took the part.
Matthew Warchus (“Pride”) directs the film from a script by Dennis Kelly while the original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin will be included.
Sony will release the feature theatrically in the UK with Netflix releasing it on the streamer in December.
