A full seven years after it closed for a ‘brief’ reconstruction, IMAX Sydney – the only IMAX cinema in the largest Australian city – will officially open for business this Wednesday October 11th.
The Darling Harbour site used to boast the largest cinema screen in the world at 1056 sq. m/11367 sq. ft. Sadly that’s not the case anymore, the world’s largest now is in Leonberg, Germany at 836 sq. m.
The new setup in Sydney is a 4K Laser system with a 1.43:1 screen that’s 31m/102ft tall and spans 692 sq. m/7449 sq. ft. It will not have the capabilities to project IMAX 70mm celluloid film however.
Standard adult tickets for documentaries start from $19 for adults and $17 for concessions, while adult tickets for features start from $38 and concessions from $29. IMAX tickets were $35 back in 2016.
Customers will have to pay a premium for recliners or couples recliners, whilst a four-person Private Box package with an exclusive food and drink menu is available and will set you back $299.
With IMAX having been missing for so long, the company is set to bring back some of the best major titles of recent years and screen them in the format including “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Oppenheimer,” “The Creator,” “Tenet,” “Avatar: The Way of Water” and more.
In addition, tickets for this week’s “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” are already on sale with “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “The Marvels,” and “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbird & Snakes” all coming to the format.
