“Euphoria” alum Sydney Sweeney has confirmed she is playing Julia Carpenter, a.k.a Spider-Woman, in the upcoming live-action “Madame Web” movie at Sony Pictures.
Speaking with Variety in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, she spoke about landing the role saying: “I was freaking out, of course. I went straight to the comic store, and I bought every comic that mentioned my character.”
It’s not clear if her character will slip on the Spider-Woman outfit in the film, and Sweeney says don’t expect your average movie of this genre: “I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be.”
She was also asked if she hopes her character will have an “expanded role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe”, to which she “gives a coy yes”. She also smiled and shrugged when asked about potential stand-alone Spider-Woman movies.
She reportedly spent five months in Boston filming “Madame Web” which stars Dakota Johnson in the lead role. The film marks a part of Sony’s Marvel universe alongside “Venom,” “Morbius” and the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter”.
Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet also star in the S. J. Clarkson directed feature. It is set for a February 16th 2024 release.
