James Gunn’s “Superman” held its Thursday night previews last night, snagging a massive $22.5 million in the process.
That’s easily the biggest preview haul of the year to date, beating the $14.5 million in previews that Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” took in and nearly doubling those of Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World”.
It’s also the biggest preview haul of any film in Gunn’s career, overtaking the $17.5 million that his third “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie did.
It’s also ahead of Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” which managed $9 million in previews ahead of a $116 million opening weekend, and Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” which did $21.6 million in previews ahead of a $134 million opening.
As a result, the movie is tipped to open on the higher end of its projections, which are currently running anywhere from as low as $100 million to as high as $140 million domestically.
Along with at least $100 million overseas, the film is targeting a global debut of over $200 million – the haul to likely equal the film’s $225 million production budget by Sunday.
Meanwhile, “Jurassic World Rebirth” is looking to make $35-45 million in its second weekend, dropping over 50% from its debut.
