The first season of the animated series “My Adventures with Superman” has come to a close, and with it comes a discussion of how the overall season has gone.
Josephine Campbell, one of the co-producers on the series, recently spoke with Superman Homepage and addressed why Lois Lane discovered Clark Kent’s secret identity so early on in the season.
The series is set as Lois (Alice Lee), Clark (Jack Quaid) and Jimmy Olsen (Ishmel Sahid) are in their early days as interns at The Daily Planet, while Clark begins his crusade as Superman and learns his origins.
The show avoided the Lois crushing on Superman idea by making the Lois/Clark romance a central fixture of the series and having her realise Clark’s secret even before the first season’s midpoint.
Campbell explained that there were “sort of two decisions with that” regarding the choice to reveal the truth between the characters so early:
“One is, it was actually a plot point that we had during our pitch, and [co-creators] Brendan [Clougher] and Jake [Wyatt] had sort of come up with it, which is that this show is My Adventures With Superman, which is just as much Lois and Jimmy, as it is Superman. So, for us, getting them together as a team and actually finally having them all on the same side, all in on the secret was something that was sort of important to us.
Our Lois is whip-smart. So, for us, it also fed so well into the rom-com part of our show, which is secrets and lies are a thing that destroys relationships or stops them before they even grow. So, this is a huge one. That doesn’t mean that there’s not going to be more secrets or more lies. There’s still going to be some secrets and lies going on because they’re in their 20s. But for us, it was different. It was showing how smart Lois was.”
A ten-episode second season is already being produced, with Campbell saying it will “blow people’s minds”. She adds the team already have ideas for further seasons:
“We have so many plans. We’ve got lots. We’ve got seasons upon seasons figured out. Brendan’s got a whole board in his house that’s got all these ideas, so we could keep going.”
The series has received great acclaim, sitting at 100% (8.5/10) on Rotten Tomatoes with plenty of praise for its cast and lighter approach to the subject matter. The full first season of “My Adventures with Superman” is available to stream now on Max.
