“Superman” Ended Up With A $220M Debut

Warner Bros. Pictures

Warner Bros. Pictures is celebrating this morning as the final numbers for the “Superman” opening weekend are in, with the film exceeding projections and landing with a debut of $125 million domestically and $95 million overseas – a global start of $220 million.

The film specifically made $22.5 million in previews, $33.6 million on Friday, $37.6 million Saturday and $31.3 million Sunday domestically.

The film is also expected to have a solid hold next weekend with “Smurfs,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Eddington” not expected to offer much competition. The studio is reportedly (via GVN) projecting only a 50% drop – far less than the 59% of “Superman Returns,” 65% of “Man of Steel” and 69% of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”.

It will, however, likely cede the top spot to “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” when that opens on July 25th.

The film’s star David Corenswet has received acclaim for his take on Clark Kent and a new featurette has been released online showing off the actor’s first day on set.

Similarly the first photo of Milly Alcock as Supergirl has been released online accidentally via a hair styling Instagram account. The photo was taken off by the original poster, but is still circling around online.
