“Super Mario Bros.” and “Pac-Man” have topped the list of a recent THR/Morning Consult poll which asked for the most desired video game-to-film adaptations.
The poll comes in the wake of Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog” film which has raced past the $200 million mark at the global box office and, combined with the success of Netflix’s “The Witcher” (even though it was based on a book series), has reinvigorated a sub-genre notable mostly for its flops.
The poll was conducted in late February among 2,200 U.S. adults and found that 44% of respondents were “very” or “somewhat” interested in a new Mario film, the most of any other game franchise on the survey. “Pac-Man” and “Mario Kart” tied for second with 37% choosing “very” or “somewhat” interested votes.
Also making the list were “Donkey Kong,” “Grand Theft Auto,” “Call of Duty,” “Legend of Zelda,” “Super Smash Bros.”, “Tetris,” “Halo,” “Final Fantasy,” “Oregon Trail,” “Red Dead Redemption,” “Minecraft,” “Fortnite,” “The Elder Scrolls,” “Spyro the Dragon,” “Metroid,” “Pong” and “Starcraft”.
A “Mario” animated film is currently in the works from Nintendo and “Despicable Me” studio Illumination.
