“Super Mario” Sets Game-To-Film Record

Illumination

In just one week, Universal Pictures and Illumination’s Nintendo video game adaptation “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has broken two more records.

First up, it has become the top-grossing 2023 release to date at the box office with $260.3 million in domestic and $508.7 million in worldwide ticket sales through Thursday.

That sees it easily overtaking Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” which has almost ended its run with $212.2 million domestic and $474.4 million in global movie ticket sales after a month-and-a-half.

The bigger one though is that it has now overtaken “Warcraft” ($439.4 million) and “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” ($449.8 million) to become the top-grossing video game adaptation of all time.

In addition, it is now the second-biggest animated film since 2019, behind only “Minions: The Rise of Gru” which earned $942.5 million last year.

It is also already Universal’s tenth-biggest animated film of all time at the global box office and the fifth Universal film to have crossed $500 million worldwide since 2019. Only thirteen films have reached that marker in total, with Universal’s five easily more than any other studio.

It will handily beat newcomers this weekend as “Renfield” and “The Pope’s Exorcist” are tipped to each open in the $8-10 million range, whilst anime tale “Suzume” is tracking for a $5-8 million debut.
