“Super Mario Galaxy Movie” Eyes $188M Launch

Universal Pictures, Illumination, Nintendo

With Friday’s numbers in, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is currently on track to take in $129.3 million over the three-day and $188.4 million over the five-day at the domestic box-office this weekend.

The title debuted on Wednesday, pulling in $34.5 million domestically and $33.9 million overseas for a first-day global take of $68.3 million. On Thursday, it landed $24.6 million domestically and $27.9 million overseas for a global total of $122.1 million by the end of its second day.

On Friday, it pulled in $48.2 million domestically, which is admittedly slightly behind the $54.8 million domestic take of its predecessor on its first Friday. International numbers are still coming through, but it’s looking like the title will snag around $371 million worldwide by the end of its first weekend.

A24’s Zendaya & Robert Pattinson-led “The Drama” opened to $6.4 million on Friday, with a $14 million domestic and $10-12 million international debut weekend looking likely – not bad at all for an indie drama.

“Project Hail Mary” looks to slip around 40% to second place in its third weekend with $32.6 million. “They Will Kill You” will fall a sharper 62% for a $1.9 million three-day total and seventh-place position in its second weekend.

The domestic box office is passing the $2 billion mark this weekend, up 30% from the same span a year ago.
