“Super Mario,” “Evil Dead” Top Box-Office

Universal Pictures

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” remained king of the box-office in its third weekend, the film from Friday-Sunday taking a projected domestic haul of $58 million (down just 38%) and a further $65 million overseas. As a result, the film stands at $434 million domestic/$432 million overseas for a $866 million worldwide haul so far.

It’s Universal’s biggest third weekend in history and the seventh-biggest third weekend among any film domestically – coming in just ahead of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($56 million). It has also supplanted “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($369.7 million) to become the highest-grossing animated film in Universal Pictures’ history.

There is no doubt now the film will become the first movie of 2023 to join the billion-dollar club and is reportedly playing more like a major all-audience blockbuster than an animated film.

The horror feature “Evil Dead Rise” came in second – taking $10 million on Friday and currently on track for an opening weekend haul of $23 million (though it could be higher). That’s ahead of expectations, buoyed by excellent reviews. The film landed a ‘B’ CinemaScore which is good by horror film standards.

Guy Ritchie’s Jake Gyllenhaal-led military action thriller “The Covenant” was third, the film on track for a $6.1 million opening. It scored good reviews and earned an A CinemaScore from audiences.

In limited release, Ari Aster’s “Beau Is Afraid” expanded to several hundred screens and is expected to gross $2.7 million and ninth place. Searchlight’s “Chevalier” is set for a projected $1.5 million.
