“Super Mario Bros. Movie” Gets A Plumbing Ad

Illumination

In a cute piece of viral marketing, Universal Pictures, Nintendo and Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has done a tie-in commercial and website advertising Super Mario Bros. Plumbing.

It was previously indicated the studio would NOT be doing a Super Bowl commercial for the film this year, but the timing of the launch of this just mere hours before the game’s big kick-off is a smart move to generate conversation early. Whether they will spend big, we’ll find out during the game.

The website SMBPlumbing.com has gone up and promises: “For super service, make it Super Mario Bros. Plumbing. If you’ve got a problem with your pipes, plumbing’s our game.”

It continues: “As a family-owned and operated small business, you can expect friendly, reliable, and quality service right here in your area, Brooklyn and Queens. Your satisfaction is guaranteed—because we don’t make messes, we fix them.”

The film marks the first adaptation of the franchise, and a Nintendo property, since 1993’s infamous live-action take on Mario.

The voice cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel, the film is set to start unrolling internationally on March 31st followed by a U.S. release on April 7th.
