Streaming Now More Watched Than Cable

For the first time, streaming has overtaken cable television as the most watched platform across the television landscape. Streamers accounted for 34.8% of all TV usage in the United States in July according to Nielsen’s monthly Gauge platform rankings.

July was fueled by several major streaming launches, including the last two episodes of the fourth season of “Stranger Things” along with the third seasons of “The Umbrella Academy” and “The Boys”. Streaming usage has increased every month since March, growing by an average of around 1% per month.

Meanwhile cable at 34.4% and broadcast TV at 21.6% fell to their lowest points in fourteen months. Cable is down by 9% and broadcast by 10% from a year ago.

Gaming, physical media playback and streaming from cable set-top boxes (which isn’t credited to individual streaming services) make up the remaining 9.2%.
