Netflix and Sonia Friedman Productions are reportedly filming the Broadway production of “Stranger Things: The First Shadow” this week.
The original Broadway cast is departing the production on March 29th, and the goal was to capture a performance of the play on camera before they left with the intent of releasing it in the future.
As a result, the production cancelled performances from today through to Saturday, with audience performances resuming on February 15th. No timeline or release schedule for the filmed production has yet been set.
The play’s story is set in 1959 and serves as a prequel to the Netflix series. It explores the origin story of series villain Henry Creel/Vecna and features high school versions of characters from the television series as their lives are upended by Creel and his newfound discovery of his powers.
The Broadway production opened at the Marquis Theatre on April 22nd last year and has seen a surge in interest after the release of the final season of “Stranger Things” on Netflix – the play becoming one of the highest-grossing shows on Broadway each week.
The story is part of the show’s canon and originally opened in London in December 2023.
