“Strange New Worlds” Pair Want TNG Crossover

Paramount+

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” begins its ten-episode second season this week, and the seventh episode in late July will bring a crossover with the animated series “Star Trek: Lower Decks”.

It doesn’t mark the first crossover for the series as the show got its start with its characters showcased in the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery”. Meanwhile, the first season finale tied heavily into a key episode of the original 1960s “Star Trek” series.

However we haven’t seen a crossover with any of the franchise’s biggest spin-offs, such as the various 1990s series. If it were up to the two lead male stars of the show, it would be happening.

Speaking with the July 2023 issue of SFX Magazine, series co-leads Anson Mount (who plays Captain Pike) and Ethan Peck (who plays Spock) were asked for their ideal “Star Trek” crossover. The pair had the same answer – “Star Trek: The Next Generation” – but both had different reasons

Mount says he’s known Captain Jean-Luc Picard himself, actor Patrick Stewart, since he was 22 years old in grad school. The pair met each other through an unnamed mutual female friend:

“That friend has now passed, and every time Patrick and I see each other, we marvel at how it’s just so sad that she’s not here to see it because she really would have loved to see us as part of the same franchise. And if we could actually be on the same show or movie or something, that would really be the icing on the cake.”

Peck’s reasons are more about having gotten to know some of that cast along with becoming a recent fan of the series:

“I’d have to say ‘The Next Generation,’ just because I’ve gotten now to work with [longtime ‘Trek’ director and Will Riker actor] Jonathan Frakes and I’ve gotten to know some of the cast. They’re so fun and wonderful, and I’ve become a fan of the show. Furthermore, I think Data is my all-time favorite character. It would be a dream come true to have a scene between Spock and Data. Played by Brent Spiner, of course.”

The recent “Star Trek: Picard” effectively wrapped up the Next Generation, though members of that cast have expressed an openness to return to Trek in the future. Could it happen? A third season of ‘Strange New Worlds’ is on the way so you never know.

“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” will begin airing exclusively via Paramount+ from June 15th.
