Oscar-nominated actor Steven Yeun (“Minari,” “Nope,” “The Walking Dead”) is set to join Marvel Studios’ “Thunderbolts” in a role that’s expected to stretch into future films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Specifics of his role are being kept secret beyond it being a significant one that will likely continue past this film. He, along with “The Bear” actress Ayo Edebiri, are among the first new characters revealed for the movie which is mostly stacked with returnees from other films and shows.
The story centers on a team of Marvel anti-heroes and shady characters who team up on missions at the government’s behest. It’s basically Marvel’s version of the Suicide Squad.
The cast includes Sebastian Stan as the team’s leader Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as The Ghost, Florence Pugh as Yelena, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and Harrison Ford replacing the late William Hurt as General Thaddeus E. ‘Thunderbolt; Ross.
Jake Schreier, known for “Robot & Frank,” is directing with “Black Widow” scribe Eric Pearson writing. Filming on the project is sat to kick off sometime in June and the film is currently slated to open on July 26th 2024. It will serve as the fifth of six films in Marvel’s Phase 5 plans.
Yeun will be seen later this year in the Netflix and A24 series “Beef” alongside Ali Wong, and will reunite with Bong Joon Ho on the Warner Bros. sci-fi thriller “Mickey 17”.
