Filmmaker Stephen Daldry, who has long been attached to the film adaptation of the Stephen Schwarz musical “Wicked,” has had to drop out of the project.
The film has been delayed numerous times over the years, but the most recent push meant Daldry was unable to commit to the new schedule. The exit was entirely amicable and a search is underway for a new director.
Like the musical, the film is an alternative telling of “The Wizard of Oz,” this time from the perspective of the witches. Screenwriter Winnie Holsman and composer Schwarz are adapting while Marc Platt is producing.
“Wicked” was set for a December 22nd 2021 release but was moved off of the Universal calendar.
