Starz is reportedly developing a sequel to its historical drama series “Spartacus” with original series co-creator Steven S. DeKnight returning to serve as showrunner and executive producer.
The original series was executive produced by “Xena: Warrior Princess” creators Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert and debuted in 2010 to strong ratings and decent reviews. The show was inspired by the story of the gladiator of the same name who incited a massive slave rebellion against Rome.
The series famously lost its leading man, actor Andy Whitfield, to lymphoma after the show’s first season. With his passing, actor Liam McIntyre took over the lead role for the remaining two seasons of the original series. A prequel limited series was also made.
According to the synopsis from Lionsgate Television, the sequel series will be set after the defeat of Spartacus and his revolution and follows: “a new tale of treachery, deceit and blood unfolding beneath the foreboding shadow of Rome.”
Kathryn Busby, president of original programming for Starz, says in a statement: “It has been over a decade since ‘Spartacus’ delighted international audiences and we are thrilled to reimagine and expand this gripping, action-packed drama for our viewers today. ‘Spartacus’ has deeply invested fans who are eager for its return, and we look forward to working with Steven on this exciting next chapter.”
The original series also starred John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Manu Bennett, Jai Courtney, Nick E. Tarabay, Dustin Clare, Jaime Murray, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Craig Parker, Peter Mensah and Todd Lasance.
DeKnight is also known for writing, directing and producing series like “Angel” and “Smallville” along with serving as showrunner on the first season of “Daredevil” and directing “Pacific Rim: Uprising”.
