“Star Wars: Lando” Series Becomes A Film

Lucasfilm

Much like Marvel Studios opting to retool the Don Cheadle-led “Armor Wars” from a series into a movie, the same looks to be happening over at Lucasfilm.

The studio has reportedly confirmed to Variety that “Lando,” the planned TV series starring Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, is being turned into a movie instead.

The project was first announced as a series in late 2020 as part of Disney Investor Day and followed in the wake of Glover playing a younger version of Billy Dee Williams’ original “Star Wars” trilogy character in the 2018’s spin-off feature “Solo: A Star Wars Story”.

At the time, “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien was attached. However, reports in July this year indicated the “Haunted Mansion” helmer had been off the project for some time.

Instead, Donald and his brother Stephen Glover had taken over writing duties with a new take that excited Lucasfilm. The pair were thought to have signed on well before the WGA strike and haven’t performed any work on it since.

Now, Stephen Glover himself dropped the news of “Lando” having become a film during a recent appearance on the Pablo Torre Finds Out podcast. He said:

“It’s not even a show…the idea right now is to do a movie. Right now, because of the strike its kinds of like telephone all of the information.”

Lucasfilm then subsequently confirmed the change of format with the trade. The Glover brothers previously collaborated on FX’s “Atlanta” and Prime Video’s “Swarm”.

The news also comes as Prime Video’s reimagining of 2005 feature “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine, has been delayed to 2024.
