“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Sets Its End

Paramount+

In an unexpected announcement, Paramount+ has announced that it has renewed its sci-fi series “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” for a fifth and final season.

The cancellation is unexpected, especially as it comes over a month before the third season premieres on the streamer on July 17th.

In addition, it’s confirmed the concluding season will run for just six episodes, not the usual ten-episode run the other four seasons have had.

In a joint statement, executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman said:

“[We’re] deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew.

From the very beginning, ‘Strange New Worlds’ set out to honor what ‘Star Trek’ has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible.

And to the passionate fans who’ve boldly joined us on this journey — thank you. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.”

Despite the cancellation, there are still 26 episodes awaiting release – more than the 20 that have aired to date. Filming on the fourth season has been underway since March with that expected to air mid-late 2026.

Presumably, the fifth season will be produced next year for a 2027 release. The show, and overall franchise, has made it clear where it is ultimately headed with a disfigured Pike bound to a wheelchair while Kirk (Paul Wesley) will take control of the Enterprise.

When that will happen in the timeline isn’t clear, also not clear is if the franchise plans to continue with a spin-off series on the Kirk-era Enterprise which the showrunners have expressed a desire to keep telling those stories.
