Originally planned for Nickelodeon, the animated kids series “Star Trek: Prodigy” will now launch on Paramount+ first with ten episodes kicking off there before eventually heading over to Nickelodeon at a later date.
ViacomCBS is positioning Paramount+ as the home for all things “Star Trek” (at least domestically) with every episode across the eleven series (and thirteen films) of the franchise – Original Series, Animated Series, Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and the upcoming Strange New Worlds – all under the one roof.
Speaking with The Live Feed yesterday right before Paramount’s Investors Day presentation that afternoon, producers Alex Kurtzman and Julie McNamara discussed what lies beyond both ‘Prodigy’ and “Strange New Worlds” which sees Anson Mount’s Christoper Pike return and lead the original Enterprise prior to Kirk’s tenure:
“McNamara: We are in discussions about the next phase of the Trek universe beyond those five shows that Alex has built. We are invested in growing the universe of Star Trek. That said, it’s important to make sure that we are curating these properly.
We’re always incubating a number of things together and then working out what the right cadence is and what the right next show is. Those are active and constant conversations. There are multiple things in the hopper right now that represent that next phase but we don’t want to expand it too much, too fast to where anyone is ever saying, “It’s just another Trek show.” We don’t want that.
Kurtzman: Yes, we’ve thought beyond the five [shows]. Yes, we’re having conversations about what happens beyond the five. But we have to make sure we’re staying true to the way we’ve built the first five. Each show is incredibly different, offers a specific thing, they’re not all targeted at the same audiences – but interestingly enough, they tend to bring in the same audience. It’s difficult to make something for everyone. You end up making something for no one when you take that approach.
Sadly no comment was made on any potential HD remasters of either “Deep Space Nine” or “Voyager”. No word either as to what’s happening internationally as ‘Discovery’ is on Netflix overseas and ‘Picard’ is on Amazon and are expected to remain that way for at least several years even as Paramount+ does have plans to star expanding internationally this year.
Filming on the fourth season of ‘Discovery’ began in November last year, and began on both ‘Strange New Worlds’ and the second season of ‘Picard’ last week. At least two of the three are expected to make use of the StageCraft video wall technology employed heavily on “The Mandalorian”.
Big news #StarTrek fans. A first peek at our #Prodigy bridge crew. Thank you @benhibon and all the artists @NickAnimation for bringing this motley crew to life. pic.twitter.com/GB9Ojqz3ZH
