Paramount+ will wave goodbye to its flagship “Star Trek” series as the sci-fi drama’s upcoming fifth season has been confirmed to be the show’s last.
Principal filming of the new season is mostly complete but with the announcement of the show’s end, additional filming is being done to help craft a proper conclusion for the series.
In addition it has been confirmed the final season won’t be arriving this year, instead the series will premiere in early 2024 on the Paramount+ service.
The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well … dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.
Starring Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh, and Doug Jones, ‘Discovery’ launched in 2017 and adopted a more serialized storytelling format than past Trek shows.
Its success led to numerous other “Star Trek” series on the air, with the second season’s introduction of Enterprise crew members successful enough to generate the acclaimed “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” series.
Fans relationship with ‘Discovery’ has often been contentious. The series has been seen as having improved with a time jump at the end of the second season taking the show well past established Trek canon.
The decision to cancel the show is not surprising as earlier this week Paramount Global CFO Naveen Chopra told an investor conference on February 28th that the company might spend less on streaming content in 2024 than previously forecast in the wake of the integration of Paramount+ and Showtime.
Discovery’s end also follows on the heels of “Star Trek: Picard” coming to a wrap with its currently airing third season, leaving ‘Strange New Worlds’ as the new captain and sole live-action “Star Trek” series alongside the animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks” and “Star Trek: Prodigy” series. The second season of “Strange New Worlds” airs later this year.
