Filming on the fifth season of “Star Trek: Discovery” has officially wrapped in Toronto after five months of filming.
The new run gets a shorter ten-episode order to bring it in line with the other “Star Trek” series on the air, whilst the show’s tone is also expected to have an overhaul.
Gone are the ‘galaxy ending’ stakes of the previous seasons. Instead, this is a more quest-based adventure with presumably a lighter tone.
In the new run, Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncover a mystery that sends them across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose existence has been hidden for centuries.
Others are on the hunt to claim the prize for themselves and are desperate enough to stop at nothing to get it.
The usual cast is back, including crew members Sonequa Martin-Green (Captain Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker) and Blu del Barrio (Adira) along with guest stars Tara Rosling (Ni’Var President T’Rina), Chelah Horsdal (Federation President Rillak), Oded Fehr (Admiral Vance), and David Cronenberg (Kovich).
Joining them this year are Callum Keith Rennie in a series regular role as Starfleet Captain Rayner, and couriers turned outlaws Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis).
As it’s a ten-episode run, it’s unlikely to be split in two like last season, but when the new run will air hasn’t been announced. Paramount+ tends to stagger airings of “Star Trek” seasons and already has a third season of “Star Trek: Picard” essentially done as it wrapped filming way back in March.
That final season of ‘Picard’ is set to air from February 16th-April 20th next year. That will likely be directly followed by the second season of “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” which wrapped filming in July and so is further along in the post-production process than “Discovery” S5. Should this kick off straight after, it would begin airing in July next year.
It’s a wrap!! That about does it for Season 5 of Star Trek Discovery. It was a wild, productive, and innovative journey over this past year.
