It has been more than a year since there was any talk of it, but the long-rumoured live-action “Star Trek” comedy series is still in development.
Co-created by filmmaker Justin Simien and “Star Trek: Lower Decks” actress Tawny Newsome, the series was first announced in 2024 at San Diego Comic-Con.
Appearing at the New York City premiere of the new “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” series, Newsome explained that the scripts had been completed and formally submitted to the studio.
She adds that they were well received internally, but no official green light has yet been handed out. She tells TrekMovie:
“The conversations that I have had is, ‘Hey, we finished writing it,’ and everyone said, ‘Yep, we love it.’ And then we turned it in, and then it was Christmas…. The business is in an interesting place right now… Who knows?
I’m so proud of the work that Justin and I did. We love our scripts. We’re ready for someone to just decide. If it’s meant to be, it’ll be. If not, I’ll go do something else. But we love what we wrote.
We had really great partners at the studio. I know it is rare to come away from notes with studio folks sometimes and be like, happy and be like, ‘Oh my god, that was a great idea.’ They really helped us shape it in a way that still felt like us.
Now it’s just up to whatever creature is in the sky that controls all this.”
The previous description indicated that the series would follow Federation outsiders serving a gleaming resort planet find out their day-to-day exploits are being broadcast to the entire quadrant.
Newsome previously clarified that the resort planet isn’t Risa, and is a non-Federation world. Time-wise, it will be set in the early 25th century, after the events of “Star Trek: Picard”.
