We all know Netflix’s “Squid Game” has been a massive success and even now, eight weeks on, is still at the top of the streamer’s viewing charts in multiple countries.

But just how big a success it really is has become a little clearer today thanks to a new report from content analytics firm Vobile (via Variety).

The report says as of Wednesday this week, the Netflix original has eclipsed HBO’s “Game of Thrones” in terms of impact on YouTube with 17 billion views for “Squid Game”-related content like long and short-form videos and official trailers and clips.

Vobile estimates the 17 billion views have come from 129,000 uploaded videos and has resulted in 533 million engagements so far. In comparison, ‘Thrones’ pulled in 16.9 billion views from 420,000 uploaded videos and an estimated 233 million engagements over a much longer period (ie. a decade).

A Vobile exec says: “In ten years looking at YouTube, we’ve never seen anything quite like this.” A second season of “Squid Game” is looking to now be in very early development and likely years away from getting to the service.
