The Television Academy has confirmed that Netflix’s smash hit Korean-language survival drama “Squid Game” is indeed eligible for Primetime Emmy consideration.
According to a spokesperson, as the series was produced under guidance from Netflix (an American company) and was always intended to be distributed in the United States, it qualifies to enter the Primetime Emmy race.
As the show was produced internationally, it is also eligible to enter the International Emmys. This is where it faces a dilemma – under the rules it has to choose one as it cannot be entered in both.
This has led to speculation the series might try and turn both its popularity and critical acclaim into a shot at the big award and hopefully achieve the kind of success that “Parasite” did with the Oscars back in early 2020.
Going against it is the sheer number of eligible entrants which make the big categories like Best Drama highly competitive, not to mention the Academy itself which rewards more prestige dramas than popular genre fare like it did with HBO’s “Watchmen” and “Lovecraft Country”.
Netflix is expected to potentially test the show’s Emmy chances first by entering the series into the likes of the SAG Awards, Critics Choice Awards, Independent Spirit Awards and other guild awards where it’s eligible.
