The creator of the highly popular Korean TV series “Squid Game” has spoken about the concerns raised in the wake of Netflix’s announcement of the reality competition series “Squid Game: The Challenge”.
Hwang Dong-hyuk, who directed the entire run of the original series, tells EW that people shouldn’t take this new reality series “too seriously” and he’s happy for it to happen. Speaking at a press conference at Monday night’s Emmy Awards, he says:
“Yes, I am aware of the reality show being created. I actually met with the creator yesterday, and they had many questions for me. What I hope is that they will be carrying on my vision and intention as much as possible for the show.
I feel like whenever you take things too seriously, that’s really not the best way to go for the entertainment industry. Doesn’t really set a great precedent.”
Announced back in June, the ten-episode television show will see 450 English-speaking players from across the world participating in a series of challenges in the hopes of winning $4.56 million.
Whilst there is no release date as of yet, filming will take place in the UK with co-producers Studio Lambert and The Garden.
“Squid Game” won six Emmys on Monday night including honors for lead actor, direction, production design, guest actress, visual effects and stunts.
It remains Netflix’s most viewed series of all time, clocking 1.54 billion hours of views within 28 days of its release in September 2021.
A premiere date for “Squid Game: The Challenge” has yet to be announced.
