Though he delivered a number of worldwide hits, quintessentially American rocker Bruce Springsteen hasn’t been able to translate that into box-office success.
The biopic “Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere” was released in multiple markets this weekend alongside its U.S. release and is bombing – the title earning just $7 million overseas. At the same time, its domestic debut is coming in smaller than projected – slipping slightly to $9.1 million and fourth place.
Budgeted at $55 million, the film’s audience exit scores haven’t been strong, with the blame going less on the film’s makers or cast – rather its subject matter. Namely, the choice to focus on Springsteen’s depression and his arthouse album “Nebraska”. While critics may love it, the album has none of the major hits that made him a global superstar.
Crunchyroll’s anime “Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc” is topping the U.S. box-office this weekend with projections up to $17.2 million. As the film already opened last month in some global markets, it’s already up to $108 million worldwide.
“Black Phone 2” is looking to come in with $13 million and in second place for the weekend, a drop of only 52% in its sophomore run, which is quite strong for a horror film. Overseas, it earned a further $10 million, bringing the $30 million budgeted feature up to $80.4 million globally – making it Blumhouse’s highest-grossing release this year.
Newcomer “Regretting You” will arrive in third with $12.8 million while “TRON: Ares” will be fifth with $4.9 million – a 56% drop in its third weekend. Overseas, “TRON: Ares” managed a further $6.3 million and is up to $123.4 million globally – a poor result for a $180 million-budgeted film.
“Good Fortune” will fall a decent 49% in its second weekend in sixth place with $3.1 million, while newcomer “Shelby Oaks” is seventh with $2.35 million.
The weekend’s re-release of “ParaNorman” came in tenth with $1.1 million, while the limited release of “Bugonia” landed a $40,500 per screen average – the fifth best opening theater this year.
