ESPN, filmmaker Spike Lee and famed San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick have jointly decided not to complete a documentary project about Kaepernick.
In a joint statement issued to Reuters, Lee says all three “collectively decided to no longer proceed with this project as a result of certain creative differences”.
He adds that “despite not reaching finality, we appreciate all the hard work and collaboration that went into this film”.
Kaepernick saw sports and media industry backlash for his activist positions against police racism/brutality against the black community, and his taking a knee during the national anthem in protest.
Lee previously revealed the project had stalled, but couldn’t go into any detail due to an NDA. Now that it’s officially being dubbed ‘creative differences,’ speculation is going to be even more prolific.
Lee recently landed much acclaim for his latest effort “Highest 2 Lowest” which hit a limited theatrical release on Friday ahead of an Apple TV+ launch September 5th.
