Sony’s incredibly well-reviewed animated sequel “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has managed to snag $17.35 million in Thursday previews domestically at the box office.
That’s the second-largest Thursday night opening in “Spider-Man” history, trailing only behind “Spider-Man: No Way Home” at $50 million. It’s also well ahead of its predecessor ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ which earned around $3.5 million in Thursday night previews
On top of that, it’s also the second highest preview night number for an animated feature – behind only “Incredibles 2” with $18.5 million. Including those previews numbers, the film is on track to earn over $40 million today.
Its three-day projections of $80-90 million could be exceeded depending upon how front-loaded the film is, though some rivals are reportedly suggesting an opening well into the $100-110 million range. Overseas, it’s going well with the film hauling in a further $13.55 million in previews.
Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, gushing about the movie with the Rotten Tomatoes score at a stellar 96% for critics and 98% for audiences – essentially unanimous raves across the board.
Disney will also hold the second, third and fourth spots on the box-office charts this weekend – “The Little Mermaid” in second with around $42-44 million (down 54%), “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in third with $10.5 million (down 49%), and “The Boogeyman” in fourth with a $10+ million debut. “Fast X” will round out the Top 5 with an $8.3 million haul.
