The animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has begun releasing worldwide, and with it comes what is expected to be a global box-office debut weekend of over $150 million.
The film is being projected to earn $80-90 million domestically from Friday to Sunday, whilst overseas it is tipped to bring in $60 million, including at least one-third of that from China.
That’s a significant boost on the $35.3 million domestic opening the first film debuted to back in 2018. That film ultimately made $384.3 million worldwide off a $90 million budget combined with massive critical appreciation and an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
The sequel is said to boast a budget not much larger at $100 million, despite a decidedly bigger scale and more complex animation, so Sony Pictures should easily make its money back and start generating profit quickly.
Helping it along are the reviews. With 82 reviews counted, the film is up at 95% (8.7/10) on Rotten Tomatoes whilst over on Metacritic it’s at 87/100. That’s essentially on par with its predecessor, which scored 97% (8.8/10) on RT, and 87/100 on MC.
It’s also not facing that much competition. Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” is expected to come in second with $40 million domestically – a drop of 58%. Overseas, ‘Mermaid’ is sinking as disappointing box-office returns suggest that though the film could very well break-even, it’s not doing enough business overseas to be a profit generator for Disney.
Also opening this week is the horror feature “The Boogeyman,” which is expected to do around $15 million for the weekend domestically.
