Nicolas Cage lent his voice to the Spider-Noir character in 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” one of the most memorable parts in that feature.
So the news that he would reprise the role for the upcoming live-action “Spider-Noir” series, also got people excited. What wasn’t clear is how connected the show would be to the films but some was expected as Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Amy Pascal are all onboard as producers.
The series tells the story of Ben Reilly (Cage), a seasoned, down-on-his-luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life, following a deeply personal tragedy as the city’s only superhero.
Co-showrunner Oren Uziel has now set the record straight while talking with Empire, saying it’s a different universe to the Spider-Noir we saw but it’s essentially the same character:
“Same character, different universe. It’s a different flavour of that character, even though it’s still Nic’s voice. It’s not a continuation of Into the Spider-Verse. Once Phil and Chris introduced the idea of the multiverse, I think you’re allowed to take things and make them your own.”
He adds that his and Cage’s priority was to “make a version of Spider-Man that no one had ever seen before.”
He also revealed that he Cage ended up watching the eight-episode season together and Uziel says Cage: “spoke his own lines back, with pleasure and glee. It was one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever experienced.”
Abraham Popoola is reportedly playing Tombstone in the series which also includes Lamorne Morris, Karen Rodriguez, SAG winner Jack Huston and Emmy winner Brendan Gleeson.
Lukas Haas, Cameron Britton, Cary Christopher, Michael Kostroff, Scott MacArthur, Joe Massingill, Whitney Rice, Amanda Schull, Andrew Caldwell, Amy Aquino, Andrew Robinson, and Kai Caster guest star.
All episodes of “Spider-Noir” premiere on Prime Video on May 27th.
