They’ve taken their darn time doing it but finally, “Spider-Man Remastered” has been made available to buy as a standalone on PS5.
The PS5-only next-gen remaster of 2018’s “Marvel’s Spider-Man” was previously locked to being only for those who bought the Ultimate Edition of “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” when it was released in late 2020.
Owners of the existing PS4 version of “Spider-Man” couldn’t simply upgrade to the new remaster without buying the top version of the ‘Miles Morales’ game.
Then last year, the game became available as a standalone on PC even as the PS5 version was still locked to the ‘Miles Morales’ Ultimate Edition.
Now though, Sony has announced the 2020 remaster will be available for new buyers for $50 USD, whilst those who already own the game on PS4 can upgrade for $10. Your save data carries over as well.
The remaster comes with various visual improvements, including ray tracing, super fast load times due to the PS5’s SSD times, and a 60fps mode along with all the DLC built in.
One infamous big change that remains debated is the altering of Peter Parker’s face with actor John Bubniak from the original PS4 version replaced by model Ben Jordan – the latter bearing such a striking resemblance to Tom Holland, the new Peter has been referred to as ‘Hom Tolland’. Yuri Lowenthal remains as the voice of Peter.
The release comes months ahead of “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2” which is expected to be released exclusively on PS5 around September.
It also follows reports last week that Sony’s overall strategy of putting more first-party games on PC is still pushing forward – even with the rather disastrous launch of “The Last of Us Part I” on that platform. That game has subsequently seen numerous patches that have fixed a good share of its bugs.
