Whilst the “Spider-Man 2” footage and “Metal Gear Solid 3” remake reveal drew raves, and a few other clips were well regarded, the PlayStation Showcase had one thing that caused mostly outright confusion – Project Q.
As shown at the presentation, Project Q is a handheld device that essentially appears to be a DualSense controller split in half with an 8-inch LED screen sandwiched in the middle.
It is NOT a portable games console (ala. PlayStation Vita, PSP, SteamDeck, Switch, Asus ROG Ally), nor is it a cloud streaming device. Instead it requires a PS5 and uses Remote Play to access it – an ability that’s already been available on phones and tablets for years.
The appeal mainly seems to be for those who want to use a PS5 at home when they’re unable to access it from wherever they’ve got their console set up.
Insider Gaming, which broke the original report about the device, has revealed that the handheld’s battery life isn’t that great but is on par with most handhelds – the site indicating Project Q will hold a charge of just 3-4 hours.
As the site indicates, these figures are not final and could change with the commercial version of Project Q. The success of Project Q will depend largely on its price – should it be cheap then it could be a solid seller, but PlayStation isn’t exactly known for being cheap with its hardware.
Further details on Project Q are due out later and a release is rumored to be targeting late November.
