Sony has reportedly begun beta testing cloud streaming of PS5 games for random PSN users.
When launched, it will ultimately roll out as part of the Premium tier of the PlayStation Plus service. Said service is currently able to stream PS3 and some PS4 titles in select territories but hasn’t included any PS5 titles to date
Users selected for the trial tell Resetera that the service offers 720p, 1080p, 1440p and 4K resolution – the latter ultra high-definition format not offered by rival Xbox’s Cloud Streaming.
Supported titles reportedly include PS5 games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue, Game Trials, and supported digital PS5 titles that players own. One advantage of this is that it allows players to jump into their favorite games without downloading them first onto the console.
The news follows on from comments earlier this year by Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan, who says the company has “aggressive plans” in the cloud gaming space – even as technical and availability issues still plague cloud-based gaming.
It also comes ahead of Sony’s Project Q, a handheld gaming accessory for the PS5 launching later this year, allowing remote play via Wifi.
