Sony has announced its new State of Play is on the way this week with the forty-minute event taking place on Thursday August 6th at 1pm US-PT.
In a surprising announcement though, the company says it will focus on upcoming PS4 and PS VR titles and won’t offer any details on any new PS5 titles. It will cover some PS5 third-party and indie titles but only those seen in June’s PS5 showcase.
They also make sure not to hit the same problem Xbox faced back in May with their update, saying many of the things that have been rumored about this presentation are outright false: “just to be super clear – there will be no PlayStation Studios updates in Thursday’s episode. There won’t be any updates around hardware, business, preorders, or dates either.”
That means no PS5 price point, release date, back of the console imagery, new titles or other details. However there will potentially be new looks at titles like “Cyberpunk 2077,” “Marvel’s Avengers,” “Star Wars: Squadrons,” “Watch Dogs Legion” and “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla”.
Sony has also cleared up some accessory talk regarding the PS5:
– The PS4’s DualShock 4 controller will be able to play PS4 games but can’t be used on any upcoming PS5 games as the new titles “take advantage of the new capabilities and features we’re bringing to the platform, including the features of DualSense wireless controller.”
– PS4 PlayStation Camera will be forward compatible on PS5 for both existing PS4 games and new PS5 games that support the device. It will require an ‘additional adaptor’ which will come “at no extra cost to the user”.
– Specialty peripherals, such as officially licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks, will work with PS5 games and supported PS4 games.
– Also working are PlayStation’s Platinum and Gold Wireless headsets, third party headsets that connect via USB or audio jack, and PS Move and PS VR controllers with “supported PS VR games on PS5.”
