Sony is ordering at least 50% more PlayStation 5 consoles than it had originally planned to ship this year, according to the Japanese press.
The company was expecting to produce around six million consoles by the end of March 2021, but now Nikkei Asian Review and Bloomberg are indicating that it could reach as high as ten million united by the end of 2020.
Sony is also said to be increasing production for PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller beyond the initial ten million units planned. To give you a context, the PS4 launched in November 2013 and ‘sold through’ 4.2 million units by the end of December of that year.
Mass production on the PS5 began in June with the new plan expecting to assemble five million units by the end of September and another five million between October and December. The raised expectations are being tied to increased demand for at-home entertainment in the coronavirus age.
Potential delays though come in the form of shipping constraints as a large proportion of Sony’s consoles are made in China and sent out via sea around the world.
The news comes as Amazon’s placeholder page for the console has gone live at Amazon.com.
