Sony Pictures is reportedly exploring alternative distribution paths for the animated feature “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania”.
The three previous entries in the popular kid-friendly franchise grossed more than $1.3 billion worldwide since 2012. The new one, dubbed the final chapter of the series, was set to open in cinemas October 1st.
However the rise of the COVID-19 Delta variant has led to not just concerns over box-office performance, but also the safety of children under 12 in public spaces as there is no vaccine yet available for that age bracket.
In addition, exhibitors are planning vaccine mandates for indoor events – only further reducing the financial viability of any family movies set for theatrical only runs.
So, Sony has reportedly been forced to consider several options from another delay to a sale to a streamer. Sony previously sold “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Wish Dragon” and “Vivo” to Netflix this year – all of which have premiered.
