A new report over at Bloomberg about the consumer memory production shortage, nicknaming it ‘RAMmageddon’, has gone into the various ramifications across the tech industry.

As previously reported, the surge in demand for HBM memory production for artificial intelligence servers has led to a real shortage in consumer-supplied DRAM used in devices from laptops to phones, televisions, PCs and game consoles.

Apple, Tesla and many other major corporations have warned that the memory shortage will constrain production, and the trade claims “Sony Group Corp is now considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console to 2028 or even 2029” according to their sources.

The trade also claims Nintendo is “contemplating raising the price” of the Switch 2 later this year. Though earlier this month Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said there are still no plans to increase the price of Switch 2 at present but they will continue to assess the market and take appropriate measures.

Speaking with multiple tech industry experts, it’s clear the RAM shortage won’t be resolved any time soon. In December it was suggested by industry insiders (via PC Gamer) that the RAM shortage crisis will run through 2028, and perhaps even beyond.

Sticks of DDR5 RAM for computers are now selling for triple, even quadruple, what they were six months ago and can cost more than entire game consoles.
