Sony Pictures Classics has delayed its bromance comedy “The Climb” just days out from release.
Making its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last year, the Michael Angelo Covino directed film follows two best friends whose enduring relationship hits a speed bump when one sleeps with the other’s fiancee. The story follows them across years of laughter, heartbreak and rage.
The film was scheduled to open this coming weekend in New York and Los Angeles, but with the mayors of both cities shutting down cinemas and entertainment venues in those cities for at least the next three weeks, the distributor opted to pull the film.
The Los Angeles ruling does not impact smaller enclaves in Los Angeles County such as Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Pasadena and so the film still could have opened in those places but has opted not to.
Other limited releases scheduled to open in the next two weeks like “Deerskin,” “Human Capital” and “Military Wives” are still scheduled but could well be cut shortly.
UPDATE: “Deerskin,” which was to open this week, has also been delayed.
