In the wake of the “Uncharted” film’s $51 million domestic, $106 million global and $139 million total gross so far, it looks like Sony Pictures is keen to continue on with this as a franchise.
In a company-wide email on Monday, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group Chairman and CEO Tom Rothman celebrated the film’s success and thanked staffers for delivering a blockbuster exclusively theatrical hit.
He specifically called it a “new hit movie franchise for the company” and a “great victory for every single division of the company”. The film is the first feature from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation Productions label which is also working on HBO’s “The Last of Us” series and Chad Stahelski’s “Ghost of Tsushima” movie.
It was also the first major film production entirely shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It took two years but ultimately the $120 million-budgeted movie made it to screens and Rothman says its “another blow to the theatrical naysayers and further proof of the efficacy of our model.”
He may have a point as between “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” and “Uncharted,” Sony Pictures’ films have grossed over $3 billion worldwide in the past six months as they’ve stuck to the 45-day theatrical exclusive window.
In several interviews in the past few weeks, director Ruben Fleischer has expressed hope about doing a sequel.
