Sony Announces PlayStation Portable Device

Sony Interactive Ent.

Sony has officially announced a $199.99 and €219.99 price for the newly named ‘PlayStation Portal’, the device formerly known as Project Q which was first teased a few months ago.

Effectively a DualSense controller with an 8-inch LCD screen in the middle of it, the screen is reportedly capable of 1080p resolution at 60fps and serves as a Remote Play handheld device that can stream games from a PS5 console.

The controller has adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, just like a regular DualSense. There’s also a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio.

In their blog post, the company describes it as the “perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house.”

The device will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi, allowing one to jump between console and handheld with ease. The device can play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and use the DualSense controller.

The device will NOT provide access to cloud streaming of games on PlayStation Plus Premium, nor PS VR2 games, and players will need to own PS5 hardware for it to work. As there’s no processing required, the battery life of the Portable is expected to be more considerable than a Switch, SteamDeck or ROG Ally and more akin to a standard DualSense controller.

Also announced are Pulse Elite and Pulze Explore, wireless earbuds and headset respectively, offering lossless audio and AI-enhanced noise rejection capable of filtering background sounds. They can connect directly with PlayStation Portal by new wireless audio technology dubbed PlayStation Link.

Hands-on videos with the device are up at CNet and IGN.
