Sony Animation Chief Expects More Adult Titles

Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson, speaking at the Collision From Home virtual conference today, says that more animated titles will target older audiences in the near future.

She attributes the change of demographic towards the older bracket and away from family fare due to an overall boom in interest caused by COVID-19 and the current trend toward diversification:

“I don’t think you’re going to see more family animated movies because that’s very saturated. There will be more R-rated animated movies. There are a couple we’re working on and we’re really excited about releasing our first one. I think you’re going to see PG-13 animated movies, which is something you haven’t seen before. Harder action-adventure sort of stuff.”

Sony had a breakthrough with “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” which was rated PG and racked up $375 million in global box office along with making many critics Top Ten lists and winning an Oscar for best animated feature.
