Paramount Pictures is officially moving forward with a third “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie and locked down a December 20th 2024 release date for the feature.
The announcement follows “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” landing a huge $72.1 million domestic box office opening weekend and going on to gross more than $401 million at the worldwide box office – and that was while the box-office recovery was still getting started.
The sequel was also one of the few films of the COVID-19 era to open ahead of its predecessor, landed the biggest launch of all time for a video game adaptation, and was Paramount’s biggest three-day opening since 2014.
With the date announced, Paramount also revealed it had pushed back its “The Smurfs” animated musical from that Dec 2024 date to a February 14th 2025 opening.
“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” is currently slated to open opposite James Cameron’s third “Avatar” film.
