“Social Network 2” Focusing On Haugen?

Sony Pictures

The other week came the news that “The West Wing” creator Aaron Sorkin was set to write and direct “The Social Network Part II” for Sony Pictures, a sequel to the highly acclaimed 2010 film which he wrote and David Fincher directed.

A sequel has long been teased but never really gained much serious traction until now with Sorkin having reportedly found the angle into the story.

Said angle means it’s not a straight sequel but rather a follow-up to the original movie, with the story said to be tied to The Wall Street Journal‘s “The Facebook Files” series of articles in 2021 which exposed the company as being aware of the platform’s harmful effects on larger society.

Now, World of Reel is reporting that the sequel will reportedly place more of a focus around Frances Haugen, the whistleblower whose 2021 Congressional testimony shook the tech world.

The outlet indicates Sorkin’s script centers on her decision to leak the thousands of internal documents that lead to the series of damning articles about the website’s spread of misinformation, hate speech, and its impact on teenage mental health.

Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin and Stuart Besser are producing the new film, with casting expected to begin soon.
