Zack Snyder will soon be returning to screens with “Rebel Moon,” his epic two-part sci-fi feature for Netflix. The streamer essentially gave him the freedom to create his own “Star Wars”, and he’s done so with the results coming in December.
Today, a bunch of photos from the film have gone up as part of a feature piece in Vanity Fair which goes into new details about the film which started out a single sci-fi epic.
It has since morphed into a two-parter with separate cuts of both films for general audiences and adults. Initially, the script was one movie clocking in at 172 pages.
Producer Deborah Snyder explains that Netflix chairman Scott Stuber told them: “On the service, under-two-hour movies really do better for some reason”, even as users will also binge-watch a series of eight episodes. That’s when the split talk happened:
“Zack said, ‘If you ask me to make this less than two hours, I’m going to lose all the character. You won’t care about these people. It’s a character story about how people can change, and redemption, and what are you willing to fight for.’ So he said, ‘What if I give you two movies?'”
Each film will also be getting two cuts, with both versions of each film launching on the same day. The first is a general cut “anyone can enjoy and watch,” says Zack Snyder, who adds the second cut is “for fans of mine and people who are ready to take a deeper, harder dive, that’ll be fun for them.”
The film sees the wealthy and politically powerful Imperium demanding resources from the moon of Veldt. However, Kora (Sofia Boutella) rallies villagers on Veldt against the oppressive regime of the Imperium’s Mother World.
Little do the rebels know that Mother World’s imperial power is slipping, and Veldt’s rebellion may be of greater importance than anyone realises. Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Cleopatra Coleman, Ray Fisher, E. Duffy, and Staz Nair co-star.
The first “Rebel Moon” is expected to debut on Netflix on December 22nd, whilst the second doesn’t have a release date. However, Snyder says it “won’t be long after” as Netflix can “do things that a traditional studio can’t do as far as how close together the movies are released.”
