For a few years there, director Ava DuVernay was attached to a film adaptation of Jack Kirby’s classic DC Comics title “New Gods” which oversaw the creation of famed DC villain Darkseid.

Then back in April, she revealed the project had been scrapped alongside James Wan’s “The Trench” film. The other day, DuVernay spoke with
Radio Andy on SiriusXM (via The Playlist) and offered insight into what happened.

In the clip, she seems to suggest that the launch of the recut “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” back in March caused a conflict at the studio and led to Warners passing on “New Gods”:

“The studio decided they did not want to pursue a certain part of that comic world based on some things that were going on with another film in that world. So, before I even was able to kind of complete my script with Tom King, they axed it.”

Snyder’s recut film included the characters Darkseid and Granny Goodness from the “New Gods” comic in its narrative which is being seen as a potential source of confusion for the new film which Duvernay was to have helmed and co-written alongside comic book writer Tom King.

DuVurnay is still working with WarnerMedia on other comic book turned series titles including “DMZ” and “Naomi”.
