Following the successful launch of “Army of the Dead” on Netflix back in April 2021, a direct sequel to Zack Snyder’s zombies in Vegas movie was officially put into development.
Separate from the prequel spin-off film “Army of Thieves”, which was released shortly after and made by a different director, the new film was to be titled “Planet of the Dead” and has Snyder returning as director and continuing on with a larger scale story.
Of course, Snyder had another job to deal with first – his two-part “Rebel Moon” films which essentially see the “300” and “Man of Steel” director doing his version of “Star Wars”.
Recently speaking with The Nerd Queens about where the project stands, Snyder says his ‘Army’ franchise is “still alive and well”, but progress on the sequel will depend on how they would go forward with his new franchise:
“As far as the ‘Army’ Universe goes, it’s still alive and well in my mind. I know exactly what I would do. It really depends on how we try to figure out how we go forward with ‘Rebel Moon’ and [the] ‘Rebel Moon’ universe. It’s not a small-time commitment, the ‘Rebel Moon’ stuff, because a sci-fi thing at this scale does require a lot of attention to make it all make sense.
It’s a very interconnected world. And we’ve been doing our best to make it all make sense, and there’s like magic and madness, and all the things that are in the universe, and how they all you know coalesce is not a casual pursuit.”
Whilst he says the ‘Army’ sequel is still on the cards, the planned animated spin-off show “Lost Vegas” is less likely to be happening: “I will say that there’s been a slight stall on the ‘Lost Vegas’ animated [series]. For technical reasons, it went off the rails a little bit.”
The first of the “Rebel Moon” films is due on the streaming service in December, it’s not clear when the second will arrive, but the films were reportedly shot back-to-back.
In the film, a peaceful colony on the galaxy’s edge is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. The desperate civilians dispatch Kora, a young woman with a mysterious past, to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them challenge the regent.
Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Ray Fisher, Doona Bae, Djimon Hounsou, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Cary Elwes and Anthony Hopkins star.
