Snyder Confirms “Rebel Moon” Director’s Cut

Netflix

In the wake of yesterday’s launch of the teaser trailer for Zack Snyder’s two-film sci-fi epic “Rebel Moon,” the filmmaker spoke with Netflix’s official news site Tudum to discuss the questions that have arisen in the time since.

The films follow Kora, a mysterious young woman who recruits warriors from neighboring planets to rebel against a tyrannical empire known as the Imperium that’s invaded their peaceful colony moon.

Influences range from “Heavy Metal” and “Star Wars” to “Dune” and the works of Akira Kurosawa along with Snyder’s own distinct taste. Back in March, sound re-recording mixer Andy Koyama revealed that Snyder was working on R-rated extended cuts for both parts of the movie alongside the PG-13 regular cuts of the film.

Snyder now confirms that a “director’s cut” for at least the first film is coming, and will be considerably longer than the regular version:

“The director’s cut is close to an hour of extra content, so I think it’s a legitimate extended universe version. You really get to see a lot. It’s just more painted-in all the way.

The director’s [cut] is a settle-in deep dive, which I have notoriously done throughout my career. I don’t know how I got into this director’s cut thing, but what I will say about it is that, for me, the director’s cuts have always been something I had to fight for in the past and nobody wanted it.It was this bastard child that I was always trying to put together because they felt like there was a deeper version.

And with Netflix, we shot scenes just for the director’s cut. So in that way, it’s really a revelation because it gives that second kick at the can for big fans, like a real discovery that they would not [otherwise] get. I’m really excited about it!”

Snyder co-wrote the film with “300” co-writer Kurt Johnstad, and “Army of the Dead” co-writer Shay Hatten.

“Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire” will have a limited theatrical run ahead of its streaming debut on December 22nd. “Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver” will release on the service on April 19th 2024.
