Snoop Dogg has responded to the backlash he received recently over comments made about the Pixar film “Lightyear”.
The rapper and hip-hop star appeared on the It’s Giving Podcast and said he was taken by surprise when he took his grandson to see the animated film and a scene appeared of Uzo Aduba’s character Alisha Hawthorne and her wife sharing a kiss and raising a child together.
That led to his grandkid asking a bunch of questions that Snoop said “I don’t have an answer for”. He added:
“It f—ed me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies now. Y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for. It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”
Now, Dogg has responded in the comments of a Hollywood Unlocked Instagram post in which actress Ts Madison called him out, saying:
“I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons. All my gay friends [know] what’s up, they been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-yr-old. Teach me how to learn. I’m not perfect.”
The film’s screenwriter Lauren Gunderson also weighed in on the topic last week on Instagram, saying:
“I was one of a few writers they had on it over the years, which is very common for screenwriting of course. I had very little to do with the final script. But I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen. I know they got a lot of shit for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters because beautiful love like this exists. It’s *not* fiction. What IS fiction is Zurg and lightspeed space travel and murderous aliens and a talking robot cat (long live Sox).”
“Lightyear” is currently available to stream on the Disney+ service.
UPDATE: Deadline reports that the apology circulating on social media from Snoop is fake, their sources say that there never was a response from Snoop to the fallout from his Lightyear statement. The original comment has since been deleted, even as it reportedly appeared to be from Snoop’s verified Instagram account.
